The Beginning

B&B Theatres stands for Bills and Bagby, two families that both launched movie theatres and joined forces-for business and love-in 1980.

The history of B&B stretches back to 1924 when Elmer Bills, Sr., bought the Lyric Theatre in Salisbury, MO, and founded Bills Theatres. It was there that he met his future wife, Johnnie, while she played the piano along with the silent movies. Years later, their son Elmer Bills, Jr., was born into the business.

In 1936, the elder Elmer hired 10-year-old Sterling Bagby as a concession clerk. Sterling grew up, fought in World War II and came home to marry his Higbee, MO ticket seller, Pauline. Together, they started the Bagby Traveling Picture Show and roamed rural Missouri with their films, projection equipment, seats and snack bar. The Bagby Traveling Picture Show screened movies in barns, schools and parks. Eventually, Sterling and Pauline's company evolved into a Kansas circuit of drive-in theatres and "hardtops" (their nickname for indoor theatres).

Meanwhile, young Elmer Bills, Jr. had met his wife-to-be, Amy, when both were 13 (he lovingly refers to her as "the best popcorn girl I ever hired") and gone on to graduate from the University of Missouri in 1959. Elmer and Amy joined his parents Elmer Sr. and Johnnie and continued the expansion of Bills Theatres, Inc.

On January 1, 1980, the Bills and Bagby families cemented decades of friendship by formally joining their two theatre companies into B&B Theatres. At the same time, Sterling and Pauline's son Bob married Elmer and Amy's daughter Bridget truly wedding the families together. After taking B&B into the 21st century, Sterling Bagby passed away in October of 2000. From 2000 to 2014 B&B replaced several of their existing locations with new state-of-the-art facilities as well as acquired, remodeled and built several new locations. In 2010 B&B premiered their first PLF (premium large format) Grand Screen® and their first dine-in Marquee Suites® concept.

On October 3rd 2014, B&B Theatres purchased Dickinson Theatres, a local Kansas City theatre circuit dating back to 1920. With the acquisition of Dickinson, an additional fifteen locations and 169 screens were added to B&B's continually growing circuit of theatres. Despite the exciting and explosive growth of the company, 2018 was a difficult year for B&B Theatres, as organization founders Pauline Bagby and Elmer and Amy Bills passed away, each having offered a lifetime of service, enthusiasm, and passion to their families, communities, and industry. Inspired by and in honor of their legacy, Bob and Bridget Bagby lead into the future and now stand at the helm of the 6th largest theatre circuit in America. And Bob and Bridget's children, Bobbie, Brittanie and Brock (yes, they are all Bs-what else could they be named?) are the fourth generation to work for their family's chain, each occupying Executive Vice Presidential positions in the corporate office.

Today

Through the years, B&B has seen the coming of sound, color, widescreen, digital, 3D and countless other advances in stereo sound and projection. Our newest complexes offer the latest in sound and comfort, including DOLBY 7.1 Surround Sound and digital sound in all auditoriums, stadium seating, wide screens, high-back rocker chairs with cup holders, luxury electric recliner seating, Grand Screens® Marquee Suites® and digital projectors with 3D capabilities. Our extended family now consists of over 1,400 employees. Today, B&B operates theaters in towns of all sizes, and we've even opened multiplex theaters in many of the same places that once were home to our old-time single-screen and twin theaters.

Since 2014, B&B Theatres has more than doubled in size, both in terms of screen count and locations.  The company has broken ground in new states, blazed trails with innovative new theater concepts and food and beverage options, and is now pioneering Family Entertainment Center facilities in landmark new builds across its footprint.

The company shows no signs of slowing as the halfway point of 2019 fast approaches, with an aggressive slate of acquisitions, new builds, and remodels demonstrates to the industry and to B&B Theatres guests the company’s commitment to innovation, fun, and the magic of the movies.

On deck for the remainder of 2019:

Platte Purchase, Kansas City, MO -  An innovative and pioneering Luxury Entertainment Complex, this facility will feature 12 lanes of bowling, a massive redemption arcade, a full-service bar and grille, eight theater screens, and all of B&B’s signature amenities.  Intended as an anchor in a $100MM+ development, this LEC will be immersed in complementary enterprises and will truly be a regional destination.

Overland Park, Kansas- A popular 16-screen location outside of the Greater Kansas City Metro, this location has been outfitted with electric leather recliners as well as screenPLAY!, MX4D, Lyric, and ScreenX concepts!  Coupled with the new bar and lounge, this facility is the premiere entertainment destination in the area!  Work is just nearing completion at the time of this release.

Venice, Florida- An 11-screen location in beautiful Venice, Florida, this acquisition gives B&B Theatres five locations in the Sunshine State!  B&B plans a major recliner remodel later in 2019.

Topeka, Kansas-  Details are still under wraps for this 9-screen new build, but the location is modeled after B&B’s Lee’s Summit New Longview facility (with a few exceptional and exciting new amenities!).  Construction is underway and the facility is expected to open in November 2019!

Hannibal, Missouri-  Stadium modifications will make way for electric recliners in this exceptional hometown theater, built in 2009.  A bar and lobby lounge will round off the remodeling efforts, set to begin in late June.

Chillicothe, Missouri-  One of B&B’s classic bread-and-butter properties, this hometown 6-screen will receive a complete makeover from carpets to paint, counters to signage, exterior façade to restrooms and offices.  Each auditorium will be fitted with electric recliners, and a bar and lounge will be installed adjacent to the lobby!  Work is expected to begin in July 2019.

Wylie, Texas-This beautiful 12-screen location already features a B&B Grand Screen and Marquee Suites, but all auditoriums will be upgraded to electric leather recliners, and the facility will include other exciting signature B&B concepts!  Remodel is expected to begin in July.

Jackson, Mississippi-  A massive remodel of an existing theater in the Northpark development of Jackson suburb, Ridgeland, MS, this acquisition will mark the company’s second in the state and is set to offer a broad array of B&B’s signature amenities.  Construction is slated to begin in late 2019.

Liberty, Missouri – Corporate Office -  In 2018, B&B Theatres built a flagship location in their hometown headquarters of Liberty, MO.  In 2019, plans are underway to build a new corporate office adjacent to the theater location.  While details are still being finalized, the office will be multi-level and designed to accommodate expected personnel growth as the company continues to pursue measured expansion in the years to come. Work is slated to begin in September of 2019.

Company History

B&B Theatres has been family owned and operated since 1924 when Elmer Bills Sr. opened a movie house in Salisbury, Missouri where the future Mrs. Bills played the piano for silent movies.  During the company’s 95 years, and four generations of family involvement, it has seen the coming of sound, color, Technicolor, stadium seating, multiplexes, recliners and digital cinema.

Current Operations

B&B Theatres is the 6th largest theatre chain in North America and, following the completion of the projects outlined above, will operate 428 screens at 52 locations in Kansas, Florida, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Texas.
